“The GOP Plan Democrats Can’t Stop Talking About” That Calls For “Tax Increases On Tens Of Millions” Of Americans

A wave of news coverage continues to highlight the Republican plan that “called for income tax increases on tens of millions of lower-income Americans” – as “Senate Democrats have homed in” on the plan and continue to hold GOP Senate candidates accountable for their party’s toxic agenda.

See for yourself:

MSNBC: After proposing tax hikes, Rick Scott denies pushing tax hikes

  • Scott’s plan called for income tax increases on tens of millions of lower-income Americans.
  • Nearly a month later, Scott is still trying to tell people not to believe their lying eyes.
  • The Florida Republican literally put his idea in writing: “All Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game, even if a small amount. Currently over half of Americans pay no income tax.”
  • In other words, tens of millions of American adults currently don’t pay federal income taxes because they don’t make enough money to qualify. As we’ve explained before, Scott, a member of the Senate Republican leadership, proposes changing that: He envisions a tax system in which those who don’t make enough money would have to pay more than they pay now.
  • Not to put too fine a point on this, but that’s what “tax increase” means.

POLITICO: The GOP plan Democrats can’t stop talking about

  • One of the biggest promoters of NRSC Chair Rick Scott’s new GOP agenda may surprise you. Or maybe it won’t.
  • The DSCC launched a new website this week — GOPTaxHike.com — to highlight Scott’s new plan. “Do Senate Republicans want to raise your taxes? Yes! Find out more below,” the website reads.
  • It’s the committee’s latest stunt to blast Scott’s proposals, following a mobile billboard that circled a meeting of Republican lawmakers last week for six hours.
  • Scott’s “11 Point Plan to Rescue America” fell flat when he launched it last month, as Democrats seized on his controversial tax proposal and Republicans cringed.
  • The DSCC’s first move after Scott’s agenda reveal was to launch a radio and podcast ad buy going after his tax proposal.

Axios: First look: Democrats add website to Scott attacks

  • Senate Democrats are launching a website aimed at keeping a controversial tax proposal put out by Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) fresh in the minds of voters this midterm year, Axios has learned.
  • Why it matters: The move showcases how Senate Democrats have homed in on Scott’s agenda… as an opportunity to try to flip the script and put Republicans on defense this year.
  • Driving the news: The website, GOPTaxHike.com, seizes on Scott’s proposal that “all Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game,” according to the press release and website mock-up obtained by Axios.
  • The website, launched by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), identifies Americans who would see their taxes raised under such a proposal, including some of the poorest groups.
  • “This website will help voters learn how damaging and expensive Republicans’ tax hikes would be for them,” said DSCC spokesperson David Bergstein.
  • “In 2022 voters will hold every GOP Senate candidate accountable for their party’s toxic agenda.”

Jacob Rubashkin, Inside Elections (@JacobRubaskin): Florida Sen. Rick Scott is very much not backing down in his spat with Mitch McConnell over his “Rescue American” plan.

Scott’s airing this ad on Fox News in the DC media market promoting the plan, parts of which earned the ire of leadership.
“Washington hates this plan.”

Joseph Zeballos-Roig, Business Insider (@josephzeballos): Democrats already seizing on Grassley’s comments

DSCC spox: “Senate Republicans are, in their own words, explaining why they should not be elected.. now they’re admitting they would keep prescription drug prices high”
