QUICK CLIP: Sullivan Fumbles on Health Care in Alaska Senate Debate

Another Republican Makes It Clear They Still Have No Plan To Safeguard Pre-Existing Conditions Protections

In a “devastating” moment in the Alaska Senate debate last night, Senator Dan Sullivan was asked how he will preserve protections for pre-existing conditions if the Supreme Court strikes down the Affordable Care Act, and, after a long, awkward pause, asked if the question was directed to him then desperately proceeded to downplay the chances of the GOP lawsuit succeeding in eradicating the health care law. Sullivan was a self-proclaimed lead attorney general in a previous legal effort to overturn the ACA and has voted repeatedly to repeal the health care law.

Sullivan’s awkward silence and subsequent dodging on the question underscored how his toxic health care record is dragging down his embattled re-election campaign. Despite his assertions that there’s no need to worry about the ACA, Sullivan and Senate Republicans have “spent the past decade trying to eradicate the 2010 law” and have done nothing to stop the anti-health care lawsuit that will be before the Supreme Court one week after the election. In fact, Sullivan is rushing to confirm a nominee who has criticized rulings upholding the health care law, potentially increasing “the court’s chances of knocking down some or all” of the ACA. His claims are nothing more than “empty promises” –– Sullivan has yet to articulate a plan that would actually keep pre-existing conditions protections intact if his party’s lawsuit succeeds.

Sullivan is just the latest Republican candidate to completely fumble on health care, showing why the GOP’s crusade to repeal the ACA and complete lack of an adequate replacement remains a massive “political liability” for the GOP that “could help determine control of the Senate.”
