Paul Skips Hearing on Terrorism in America One Day After Fifth Place Iowa Finish
A day after coming in fifth place Iowa, Rand Paul was a no-show at a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing entitled “Front-Line Response to Terrorism in America.” Was he out on the campaign trail instead?
The longshot presidential candidate claims the pursuit of his personal ambition has not come at the expense of his Senate responsibilities. However he’s made headlines for skipping out on homeland security hearings before: Buzzfeed reported he made it to just five of 73 hearings between January 2014 and August 2015. His poor record is problematic in light of National Republicans’ plan to exploit national security fears in the election year, and answers the question raised by Kentucky Republicans: When does Paul’s presidential run “get really embarrassing?”
“It’s really embarrassing: Rand Paul barely registered in Iowa last night and couldn’t be bothered to show up to his day job this morning,” said Lauren Passalacqua, DSCC National Press Secretary. “Paul doesn’t have a lot to show for either his presidential campaign or Senate career, and Kentuckians recognize that it’s time to elect someone who doesn’t look at public service as a chore to be ignored.”
