McConnell Tries To Move Past 2020 & Trump, But GOP Senate Candidates Are Doing The Opposite

In an escalation of the all-consuming feud that’s dividing the Republican Party, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell took a “jab” at former President Donald Trump today,“signal[ing] it’s time to move past Trump ‘rehash’ of 2020 election.”

But GOP Senate candidates across the battleground states are doing the opposite — spending their time embracing debunked election conspiracy theories and attacking their primary rivals to try to earn Trump’s support.

From David Bergstein, DSCC Communications Director: “In virtually every race GOP Senate candidates are spending their time sucking up to Trump, viciously attacking their Republican primary opponents or just talking about whatever they think Trump cares about, like the 2020 election. In doing so they are demonstrating how out of touch they are with the concerns of voters who will decide the general election in their states.”

See for yourself:

  • In Arizona, every single GOP candidate has “embraced some level of rhetoric” about Trump’s conspiracies in a race for an elusive Trump endorsement even after the former president lost the state in 2020.
  • In Nevada, failed candidate Adam Laxalt loudly embraced false and debunked claims of election fraud after the November 2020 election and has already made a Trumpian threat to file litigation to potentially overturn the 2022 election results.
  • In Pennsylvania, Trump’s toxic election conspiracies are running rampant as every single GOP candidate has backed baseless calls for an election audit in an attempt to use “their loyalty to the lie as a selling point” for their campaigns.
