Johnson, Rubio, NRSC Chair Scott Vote Against Overwhelmingly Bipartisan Rules for Trial to Hold Trump Accountable

Senators Ron Johnson, Marco Rubio and NRSC Chair Rick Scott voted today against the bipartisan rules for a fair trial of former President Donald Trump — once again confirming these political opportunists are more interested in playing partisan games than upholding their oaths of office. The vote was overwhelmingly bipartisan with 89 votes in favor and only 11 against.

During a 13-minute video depicting the events of January 6th introducing the case against Trump, GOP senators then “turned away” from the evidence and were not even paying attention.

“Senators Johnson, Rubio and Scott’s vote against broadly bipartisan rules for a fair and honest trial proves how much more they care about their own politics and personal ambitions than defending our democracy during this process,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “This fringe group of Republicans is trying to dismiss an open hearing on the facts because they refuse to hold President Trump accountable for inciting the violent mob attack on the Capitol and assaulting the peaceful transfer of power.”

For months, these GOP senators helped enable and perpetuate Trump’s lies and false conspiracies about the November election, stoking the flames that led to the deadly mob attack on the U.S. Capitol. Johnson abused his role on the Senate Homeland Security Committee to uplift “Trump’s anti-democratic campaign to overturn the election results,” while Scott voted to throw out Electoral College results after the insurrection and continues to defend this disqualifying action.
