National Journal’s Hotline: The GOP’s Risky Business

  • Senate Republicans’ path to the majority lies in the hands of wealthy candidates, relying on their business records and self-funding abilities to get them across the finish line without ever holding elected office before.
  • But this kind of candidate hasn’t always been the Senate GOP’s key to success in previous cycles.
  • This kind of candidate has actually hindered the party’s chances in the past.
  • This year’s slate of wealthy nominees includes…Tim Sheehy (R) in Montana, 2022 OH SEN candidate Bernie Moreno (R) in Ohio, 2022 PA SEN candidate Dave McCormick (R) in Pennsylvania, and real estate executive Eric Hovde (R) in Wisconsin.
  • Despite party leadership’s best hopes, their business credentials haven’t resonated with voters across the board and their records are being used against them.
  • Democrats are on the air attacking the candidates’ business practices and investments, scrutinizing their purported success, and questioning their ties to the state they’re running in.
  • When the candidates aren’t being hit on their abortion stances, they’re being hit on their business histories.
