Former President Barack Obama Emphasizes the Importance of Protecting Democrats’ Senate Majority

At DSCC event, Former President Obama highlighted the strength of Democrats’ Senate candidates: “our candidates, as usual, are better” and “we know how to win”

Former President Barack Obama underscored the importance of protecting Democrats’ Senate majority and the stakes of the 2024 election at a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) fundraiser in Potomac, Maryland. The event, which also included Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Jamie Raskin, raised more than $1 million towards protecting the Democratic Senate majority.

Portions of former President Obama’s remarks are below:

  • “I’m going to talk about why it’s so important to have a Senate majority.”
  • “In my lifetime, the story that allowed that journey for my mother-in-law and my wife and now my children, was enabled by values that the Democratic Party has been fighting for, for a very long time. That makes me hopeful.”
  • “By virtue of us having a very slim majority of the Senate, we’ve been able to get some extraordinary things done: prescription drug prices lowered, insulin drugs lowered, historic movement on climate change, an infrastructure bill that is remaking America, getting people back to work, expanding Obamacare.”
  • “On the legislative side, there have been some remarkable achievements that were only achieved because of that very slender, narrow win that we had.”
  • “The ability to get judges appointed. Never been more critical than it is today.”
  • “The Senate is the bulwark in which we can preserve gains that have already been made.”
  • “It allows us to hold our ground, to steady the country, serve as ballast when necessary.”
  • “What’s [keeping the majority] going to require?”
  • “It’s going to require a lot of work.”
  • “It’s going to require a lot of organization.”
  • “The good news is, our candidates, as usual, are better.“
  • “Starting here in Maryland, where Alex’s mom [Angela Alsobrooks] is going to be an outstanding US Senator… she’s got an outstanding track record, she’s going to be terrific.”
  • “The incumbents that we’re going to be protecting are some of my favorite people.”
  • “They’re good people, solid, good people. So we’re gonna hold on to those seats.”
  • “And then we’ve got some open seats, including here in Maryland, where I think we’re going to do very well.”
  • “The good news is we know how to win.”
