DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla issued the following statement on Senate Republicans filling a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court with a nominee critical of the Affordable Care Act:
“Eight days before another health care election, Mitch McConnell and Republicans in the Senate just voted to put protections for people with pre-existing conditions at greater risk than ever before, and voters across the country are going to hold them accountable for it.”
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in just two weeks in the Republican lawsuit that would kick an estimated 20 million Americans off their health insurance, end Medicaid expansion for at least 12 million people, and cut other health care benefits. Senate Republicans are on record supporting or enabling this lawsuit and have been in favor of gutting these core health care protections. Republicans’ rush to seat a new justice who has criticized rulings upholding the health care law while trying to mislead voters on their own voting records and downplay the chances of the lawsuit succeeding underscore how health care has become the “party’s albatross” and a “political liability” for the GOP that “could help determine control of the Senate.”
