Punchbowl News detailed how Republican Senate recruits’ “histories in the private sector” are liabilities on the campaign trail, calling out “Wall Street CEO” McCormick, “Multimillionaire” Sheehy, “Fat Cat” Moreno, and “Multimillionaire California banker” Hovde. 

🗞️ WHAT KARI LAKE, SAM BROWN, AND THE NRSC HATE TO READ → Inside Elections downgraded Republicans’ chances in both the Arizona and Nevada Senate races, detailing how it’s “less likely Lake catches up” in Arizona and how “national Republicans aren’t pumping cash into” Brown’s candidacy in Nevada.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER OFFEND WOMEN VOTERS TOGETHER The 19th highlighted how “GOP Senate candidates [Sheehy and Moreno] say women are ‘indoctrinated’ and ‘crazy’ on the issue of abortion,” showing “how Republicans in competitive races are struggling to connect with voters, particularly women, on the issue of abortion.”

HOGAN’S HORRIBLE WEEK: A CORRUPTION “BOMBSHELL,” MORE REPORTING ON HIS ANTI-CHOICE RECORD →

  • FIRST, TIME REVEALED “HOGAN APPROVED MILLIONS FOR HIS FIRM’S LISTED CLIENTS AS GOVERNOR” → In a bombshell report, TIME details that while Hogan was governor, “nearly 40% of the competitive affordable housing awards overseen by the governor went to developers listed as clients on HOGAN’s website,” with six of Hogan’s clients beating out more than 60 other companies, reporting that Hogan “personally voted on grants or loans to several…HOGAN-listed developers.”
  • THEN, COURIER REVEALED HOGAN’S HISTORY OF HAWKING FOR ANTI-CHOICE CANDIDATES AT THE RGA Courier Newsroom reports that “during Hogan‘s tenure…[at] the Republican Governors Association, the organization endorsed and spent millions of dollars to elect Republican gubernatorial candidates who backed, and in many cases enacted, some of the country’s most restrictive abortion bans.” 

LAKE’S DEBATE PERFORMANCE IN THREE WORDS: “FLAIL[ING],” “SQUIRMING,” AND “DODG[ING]”…→ Kari Lake’s performance in Arizona’s Senate debate was an “utter disaster,” with reports detailing how she “flailed spectacularly” and “was thrown off her game” as she was pushed on her record to ban abortion and falsely claim she won the 2022 election. Her disastrous debate performance earned widespread local and national media attention, with the Arizona Republic summarizing, “She’s just not all that likeable.” 

…AND CUT THE CAMERAS! LAKE ENDS INTERVIEW AFTER “REFUSING TO COMMIT TO CERTIFYING ELECTION” → This week, Lake abruptly ended a disastrous interview with NBC News after she refused to answer whether she would certify the 2024 presidential election if she were a U.S. Senator.

ROGERS’ HARMFUL RECORD AND SCANDALS ARE THE TALK OF THE TOWN (THAT HE DOESN’T LIVE IN!) → 

  • WHERE IS MR. ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD…NO, REALLY? → A bombshell report by the Detroit Free Press details how Mike Rogers’ house where “he’s registered to vote…does not have a certificate of occupancy,” meaning he “could not live there legally” and “may have broken the law by using that address to vote.” A wave of local and national coverage details the report, with the Detroit News writing, “Where exactly [is] the former Michigan congressman…laying his head at night”? 
  • MIKE ROGERS IS THE MAN WITH A PLAN…TO “DECIMAT[E]” RETIREES’ SAVINGS…The Michigan Independent reports that Mike Rogers “supported private investment of Social Security funds,” a plan “that would have cost retirees tens of thousands of dollars when the stock market crashed in 2008” and would have “decimated” Americans’ retirement savings. 
  • …AND HURT MICHIGAN WORKERS BY PURGING MANUFACTURING JOBS → The American Journal News details how Rogers supported free trade agreements that hurt Michigan workers and contributed to Michigan “los[ing] nearly 300,000 manufacturing jobs since 2000.” 

CHIPS DOWN: DAVE MCCORMICK “BET MILLIONS” AGAINST PA WORKERS AND COMPANIES → CNN reports that “in the years that…McCormick led one of the world’s largest hedge funds, the firm bet millions of dollars against some of the state’s biggest and most iconic companies” and “shorted the stocks of nearly 50 companies headquartered in Pennsylvania, including The Hershey Company and US Steel.”

MCCORMICK’S HEDGE FUND “MANAGED…RUSSIAN DEBT” The Guardian details that McCormick “led the largest hedge fund in the world while it managed and advised funds holding hundreds of millions of dollars in Russian debt,” adding that “these types of investment have been subject to increasingly stringent US sanctions, in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine.”

🥩 AFTER GETTING COOKED ON THE DEBATE STAGE LAST WEEK, SHEEHY GETS GRILLED FOR EVEN MORE SIZZLING SCANDALS → 

  • SHADY SHEEHY SEARED FOR WINING AND DINING MONTANA OFFICIALS TO “BENEFIT HIS COMPANY” → The Associated Press details how Tim Sheehy lobbied “Montana officials to put money into establishing a statewide aerial firefighting force that stood to benefit his company,” including taking Montana officials to “steakhouse” meals. Yet, despite his lobbying efforts, the large “contracts haven’t been enough to avoid financial troubles. Sheehy’s company — held up by his campaign as ‘a Montana success story’ — has suffered persistent losses.” 
  • …AND NOW SHEEHY IS BEING ROASTED ON THE FRONT PAGE OF MT NEWSPAPERS → Sheehy’s “lobbyist steak” scandal made the front pages of the Billings Gazette.

  • AND COVERAGE CONTINUES TO FILET SHEEHY’S RECORD OPPOSING REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM → Reporting by the Missoulian highlights Sheehy’s repeated attacks on reproductive freedoms, including how he called abortion “sinful” and “repulsive,” and “likened the Democratic Party’s position on abortion to ‘murder.’”
  • SHEEHY CAUGHT EATING HIS EMPLOYEES’ LUNCH (AND ALLEGEDLY LYING IN COURT) → Reporting by the Daily Montanan reveals how Sheehy could face legal repercussions for allegedly “filing a doctored contract with the court” and “failing to produce necessary documents” in a lawsuit accusing Sheehy of stiffing his employees. 
  • SHEEHY’S FULL MENU OF SCANDALS UNDER SCRUTINYMSNBC details how “Sheehy isn’t just facing one self-imposed mess…[but] is actually facing several,” including “racist rhetoric…controversy surrounding [his] gunshot wound…accus[ations] of plagiarism” and ”his association with a group that has advocated in support of transferring public lands.” 

DIGGING IN: HOVDE DOUBLES DOWN ON TOXIC PLANS TO REPEAL THE ACA AND SLASH SOCIAL SECURITY

  • HOVDE’S HEALTH CARE HORROR: REPEAL THE ACA “IN ITS ENTIRETY” → In an op-ed for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Hovde quadrupled down on his disastrous plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act “in its entirety,” which would increase health care costs for millions of Americans.
  • THE HOVDE PLAN: “SLASH” SOCIAL SECURITY, MEDICARE, AND VETERANS’ BENEFITS FOR WISCONSINITES → This week at a campaign event, Hovde “called for sweeping cuts to the federal budget and suggested raising the eligibility age for Social Security for people under 40 years old,” as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The same day, Hovde also advocated for $4 trillion in tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations to make multimillionaires like himself even richer. 
  • RETIRED WISCONSINITES FIRE BACK: HOVDE’S “UNFIT TO SERVE” → The Wisconsin Alliance of Retired Americans slammed Hovde’s plan to raise the retirement age and slash Social Security benefits, saying, “Wisconsinites of all ages should be appalled by Eric Hovde’s call to raise the retirement age” adding that “he is unfit to serve in the United States Senate.”

CAT(ASTROPHIC RECORD ON ABORTION) GOT YOUR TONGUE, TED? → “Ted Cruz has been a loud anti-abortion crusader throughout his political career,” the Texas Tribune reports. Still, he continues refusing “to directly answer whether he thought Texas should add carveouts for rape and incest” despite previously expressing “he did not support an exemption for rape.”

TED ONLY CARES ABOUT TED → Texas Metro News reports that “Houston-based OB/GYNs and physicians highlighted how Ted Cruz only cares about himself, not the women he has put at risk by helping establish the Texas abortion ban.”

RICK, YOUR RECORD OF DENYING CLIMATE CHANGE IS SHOWING → The Tallahassee Democrat highlights Rick Scott’s long record of denying climate change and pushing policies that harm Florida’s air and water, including “eliminat[ing] the state’s growth management agency, abolish[ing] the state’s short-lived carbon-reduction goals and reportedly work[ing] to keep climate change out of the vocabulary of his administration.”

OVER A THOUSAND WOMEN CALL MORENO “TOTALLY OUT OF TOUCH” Statehouse News Bureau details that “more than 1,200 Ohio women have signed an open letter to” Moreno, slamming him for his “insult[ing]” comments mocking Ohio women for caring about reproductive rights, calling him “totally out of touch with Ohio voters.” 

📺 GOP SENATE CANDIDATES’ SCANDALS HIT THE AIRWAVES → MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show highlighted how Ted Cruz and Rick Scott are uniquely vulnerable and detailed the latest wave of scandals plaguing GOP recruits in Pennsylvania, Montana, and Michigan. 

📺 SENATE DEMOCRATS “ON OFFENSE” IN TX AND FL → DSCC Chair Sen. Gary Peters joined MSNBC’s PoliticsNation to discuss the DSCC’s multi-million dollar TV investment in Texas and Florida and how Senate Democrats are “on the offense” and building momentum.

THE OP-EDS ARE IN: GOP SENATE CANDIDATES ARE “IN IT FOR [THEMSELVES]” AND “UNBELIEVABLY INSULTING” → 

  • LAKE “APPALLING” AND “IN IT FOR HERSELF” → Former Phoenix Vice Mayor Peggy Neely slammed Lake in the Arizona Digital Free Press, saying Lake “has made clear that she’s only in it for herself – to gain the power to impose her worldview on the personal lives of Arizonans.” 
  • HOGAN IS “NO FRIEND TO TEACHERS” → A Baltimore public school teacher called out Hogan in the Baltimore Sun, saying he’s “no friend of Maryland teachers” and citing his history “referr[ing] to his critics in our teachers’ union, as ‘thugs’” while “treat[ing] [teachers] like the enemy.”

  • Jacky Rosen’s campaign released a new ad with President Obama highlighting Rosen’s record of fighting to lower costs.

  • Angela Alsobrooks’ campaign launched a new ad, “This Time’s Different,” featuring former Hogan voters explaining why they won’t vote for him because a vote for Hogan is a vote to give Republicans control of the Senate.

  • Jacky Rosen’s campaign released a new TV ad, “Family,” highlighting her work to lower costs for hardworking Nevadans by taking on big drug companies to lower the cost of prescription drugs and going after corporate investors driving up housing costs.

  • Jacky Rosen’s campaign released a new ad, “Postal Service,” highlighting Rosen’s successful efforts to stop the U.S. Postal Service’s plan to relocate Northern Nevada’s only local mail processing facility to California.

  • Allred’s campaign also released a new ad, “More Government,” slamming Cruz for his abortion ban that has no exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the mother. 

  • Tammy Baldwin’s campaign launched a new ad, “Favor Both,” highlighting Eric Hovde’s support for raising the retirement age and gutting Social Security.
