As “Senate Democrats are in the middle of a month-long blitz to promote reproductive rights, highlighting their sharp contrast with Republicans on abortion health care as the second anniversary of the fall of Roe v. Wade quickly approaches,” DSCC Chair Sen. Gary Peters joined Morning Joe to discuss the “incredibly clear contrasts” between “our Democratic incumbents and candidates [who] are pro-choice and support the right for women to make these fundamental reproductive decisions, and they’re running against very extreme candidates that have taken extreme positions, often with no exceptions for rape or for incest.”

Jonathan Lemire: Senate Democrats are in the middle of a month-long blitz to promote reproductive rights, highlighting their sharp contrast with Republicans on abortion health care as the second anniversary of the fall of Roe v. Wade quickly approaches. Axios reports that campaigns in all battleground states are hosting events with local organizations and posting on social media, all bolstered by paid advertising from the DSCC. And, the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Senator Gary Peters of Michigan joins us now.

Jonathan Lemire: Let’s start with that blitz. Tell us more about it and why you believe it could be key to continuing the Democratic electoral winning streak going, a streak that began after the Dobbs decision.

Sen. Peters: We believe that it is incredibly important to make sure voters understand where Democrats are on a critical issue they care deeply about, which is reproductive freedom for women.

Sen. Peters: There are incredibly clear contrasts for folks that we need to make sure folks see, particularly in our Senate races all across the country. Our Democratic incumbents and candidates are pro-choice and support the right for women to make these fundamental reproductive decisions, and they’re running against very extreme candidates that have taken extreme positions, often with no exceptions for rape or for incest.

Sen. Peters: This issue continues to be salient after the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Now we’re starting to see a lot of the stories as to the impact that these decisions have had on people’s lives, on women’s lives, women who have to leave their state or have to be put into a very difficult situation where their pregnancy that is going badly is not being treated in a way necessary to preserve the health or the life of the mother, and catastrophic consequences.

Sen. Peters: You also have physicians that are concerned about providing health care because they’re afraid of someone questioning what they’re doing and what that could mean for their future and for their license. These are real consequences.

Sen. Peters: People understand what is happening here, we just have to make sure that that information gets out and the contrast is painted very clearly for voters when they go into the voting booth in November.
