Ahead of Second Anniversary of Roe Overturning, DSCC Vice Chair Smith, DNC Chair Harrison & DCCC Chair DelBene Call Out GOP Attacks on Abortion Rights

Today, DSCC Vice Chair Tina Smith, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene discussed how ongoing Republican attacks on reproductive rights are raising the stakes for the 2024 elections in the face of growing public support for abortion access. Two years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Democrats are on offense to ensure every voter knows that we are the only party working to defend these rights and codify the protections of Roe

During the call, Vice Chair Smith, Chair Harrison and Chair DelBene laid out how abortion rights are a defining issue in this election and how Republicans’ repeated attacks on this right will mobilize voters to hold the Senate, retake the House majority, and reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris.

“Reproductive freedom will be a defining issue in the 2024 Senate elections, and every Senate Republican candidate is on the record opposing women’s right to make their own personal decisions about their health care and their families,” said DSCC Vice Chair Tina Smith. “On record and on video, Republican Senate candidates have made it clear that they oppose women’s rights to make their own decisions and that they stand in lockstep with their party’s dangerous agenda to control women’s reproductive health care by banning abortion with no exceptions…Republicans say that they have a messaging problem on reproductive freedom and abortion care. No, they have a policy problem because they’re on the wrong side of American voters, and you can see it when you go to GOPonabortion.com.”

“A vote for Trump is a vote to silence our nation’s daughters and to take power from our mothers. It’s a vote to turn back the clock on the progress our grandmothers fought so long and so hard for,” said DNC Chair Jaime Harrison. “Donald Trump and extreme MAGA Republicans are on a crusade. And they want to make every state’s abortion restrictions look like those of Alabama, Texas, and North Dakota. … We need someone who will fight to restore the protections of Roe, go to the mat for access to contraception, and uplift the voices of women nationwide. … Under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ leadership, we have defended reproductive freedom in the courtroom, protected access to abortion for our military families, and we have strengthened access to contraception. … And with four more years in the White House and a majority in Congress, President Biden will codify the protections of Roe as the law of the land.”

“This election is fundamentally about our rights, our freedoms, our democracy, and our future. House Republicans have made it clear that they’re willing to do anything to take those away,” said DCCC Chair Suzan Delbene. “At the DCCC, we remain fully committed to supporting candidates who are standing up for our freedoms and our families, and holding Republicans accountable for their extreme anti-abortion stances. Come November, we’ll take back the House of Representatives and defend our rights and enshrine the protections of Roe once and for all.”
